Working with the community to restore local farming, improve economic opportunities and combat malnutrition.

Environmental Education • Soil Revitalization • Tree Planting

Greening Haiti Fund was launched in 2017 in Fond-des-Blancs, a commune of 40 small villages whose residents had been farmers for generations.

Environmental degradation, land mismanagement, and rural migration have led to deforestation, malnutrition, and widespread poverty.

How We’re Helping

Challenges

  • Unsustainable farming and logging practices in addition to severe weather events have put residents at an agricultural disadvantage

  • A once thriving ecosystem of shade, undergrowth and fruit trees has been largely decimated

  • Soil depletion has forced many residents to turn to charcoal production for income

  • Cutting trees for charcoal causes further soil erosion - less than 2% of Haiti’s original tree cover remains

  • Without intervention the land will soon be unable to support farming or charcoal production

Solutions

After identifying the needs of the community, GHF developed a three-pronged approach for sustainable community development: Environmental Education, Soil Revitalization, and Tree Planting.

Within the first year of operation, Greening Haiti Fund (GHF) leased and cleared land for a tree nursery, dug wells, built a regional headquarters, and began a soil revitalization program. With community partnerships and the heartfelt effort of the residents of Fond-des-Blancs, GHF is improving living conditions now and into the future.

Environmental Education

Local agronomists and foreign experts work with the community to encourage sustainable agricultural practices, restore soil fertility, and prevent further erosion.

Soil Revitalization

A nursery not only provides seedlings but the opportunity for our agronomists to demonstrate to the community the effectiveness of soil amendments for improved plant growth.

Tree Planting

Tree cover is a vital part of the ecology of healthy soils. Residents young and old get hands-on experience in best practices of tree planting.

Together we can make Haiti green again!

“May 1st, Labor day, 2019, more than 300 people, mostly school children,  gathered in the mountains of Fond des Blancs to celebrate by planting trees with Greening Haiti Fund. It is possible for Haiti to be green.  Greening Haiti believes where there is a will, there is a way.  The lesson begins there with the trees, by respecting mother nature, by swearing we will take care of the tree, we will water it, we will let it grow.  Thank you, Greening Haiti Fund, for doing this.  Let us help Haiti breathe.” (Facebook post by an unknown writer in Haiti)
